Lineae (Latin for “lines”) was written for string quartet and dancers. The four movements of this 15-minute piece express the idea of lines in different characters to be choreographed for three dancers. Musically, the four movements include a flowing, minimalistic opening movement, a motionless second movement, a fast and running third movement, and a desolate closing movement suggesting a recapitulation of the opening ideas.

Lineae is commissioned by the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild for Musicarama 2014. With choreography by Francis Leung and lighting design by Mike Ho, Lineae’s premiere featured Romer string quartet, a local ensemble named after Hong Kong’s endemic Romer’s Tree Frog with musicians all born and raised in Hong Kong.
