Artist

PAK Wei-ming

Pak Wei-ming is an independent choreographer and dancer. He graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in Contemporary Dance and Choreography. In 2013, he received a full DanceWEB scholar scholarship which allowed him to participate in the ImPulsTanz Vienna International Dance Festival. In 2014, he started to collaborate with US-based artist Trajal Harrell and performed The Ghost of Montpellier Meets the Samurai at Montpellier Dance Festival and Pompidou Centre in Paris. Commissioned by the Hong Kong Dance Alliance, Pak choreographed Toilet Pump (2017), and was invited to stage at the Art Festival in Instanbul, Turkey and the Ocean Dance Festival in Bangladesh in 2019. The recent choreographed and produced works of Pak include Commissioned by Hong Kong Arts Festival Pomelo. Orange. Tangerine, 900”, and Interpretations 2 (2016) at 1st Shanghai Contemporary Dance Festival. He also created dance video works INNERMOST, and choreography piece TINT for the City Contemporary Dance Company. Pak was selected to join the representative group of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, to inspect the Internation Dance Fair –Tanzmesse 2016 &2018 in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Toilet Pump

Can an object that we have never thought of including in a dance piece bring about interesting and versatile bodily responses?

Dancers are required to play with the unique characteristics of a toilet pump to experience a game-like process in which the body interacts with the toilet pump, searching for bodily, temporal and spatial changes, and eventually develop a personal style and body language in such interactions.

The characteristics and functions of the toilet pump is transformed elements about the body, the space, the sound and the visual to be manifested on stage. The inter-relationships between dancers’ bodies and the toilet pumps appears in different spaces on stage, contrasting with each other.

The piece not only quests for visual aesthetics, but also aims to explore the relationships between daily objects and dancers’ bodies, thus organically develops a unique rhythm through this unusual interactivity. The bodily responses to toilet pumps subverts the meaning of an object in dance, and creates tension between people, challenging the perceptions and imaginations of the dancers and the audience alike. Audience will also see more possibilities of daily objects in dance art, which are unprecedentedly more meaningful.

The creative process often has to comply with and, at times, be limited by, the requirements of presentation platform. If human beings are limited by the time available to them, 900″ is the duration of the work limited by the restrictions of the presentation platform.

We cannot change how time passes but we can modify the rhythm of changes. In 900”, Pak Wei-Ming incorporates objects, sound, language and movement into a contest of time and numerals. Impacted by time in its limitation, performers are required to accomplish challenges one after the other. The audience is invited to observe these challenges while reflecting on the impact of time and regulations on the self.

Ultimately the oven’s timer has the final say on to what extent the work will be finished.
