Fragrant Village

Fragrant Village was founded in 2016 as a non-profit association in Hong Kong. We create music inspired by the land with the villages of Hong Kong at the heart, aiming to invite the public to enter these villages and experience their history, culture and ecology.

We organise music events in unconventional venues to widen the horizons of both the performers and the audience, providing an intimate space for dialogue as well as creative inspiration.

Recent works include Fragrant Village, an album by local villagers and artists, and I We You They He She It, an exhibition on village school anthems.

The album is the fruit of extensive dialogues between local musicians and villagers from northeastern New Territories, namely Ping Che, Kwu Tung and Ma Shi Po. It was borne out of the Ping Che Village School Art Festival by EmptySCape in 2013. Ping Yeung School alumni returned to the long-defunct campus and sang their school song aloud on stage. We were moved by the power of music and wished to recreate such intensity and the love of one’s land through music.

The album was recorded outdoors in northeastern New Territories to capture the everyday texture of sound in-situ. Every passing moment of the album is an aural journey that brings us to love and cherish our villages a little more.
