A Heroine in Chinese ~ Zhang Yue Zhao
Set near the end of Ming Dynasty and the beginning of Ching Dynasty, the differences in costumes between the two dynasties are remarkable. The vivid character of Zhang Yuezhao upends people’s negative notions towards courtesans and concubines as Zhang was revered as a strong-minded heroine loyal to her family and country. On the contrary, the male lead is a petty character incapable of great things whereas the authoritative official is portrayed through a comedic role. When her husband loses in the war, Zhang remarried against her wish so her family would be spared execution. The performance is highly commended for its reflections on traditional Chinese bureaucracy, Confucianism, and the differences in people’s sense of humanity and nobility.
