Regarded as one of the leading orchestras in Asia. With history stretching back to 1895, it became fully professional in 1974

Annual schedule focuses on great symphonic repertoires as well as commissions of new music, pops concerts, opera (staged and in concert). Since Jaap van Zweden became Music Director in 2012, the orchestra has toured to various cities in China, Taiwan and Europe, highlighted by the filming of a sold-out concert from the Musikverein hall in Vienna

Undertakes new projects including the first-ever performances by a Hong Kong or mainland Chinese orchestra of Wagner’s The Ring of the Nibelung. The four operas are performed in concert and recorded live

Promotes works by Hong Kong and Chinese composers through an active commissioning programme, and has released recordings featuring Tan Dun and Bright Sheng.
